From: Rick Farris (rfarris@rfengr.com) Subject: BSD, Inc. AT&T-free BSD Newsgroups: comp.unix.sysv386 View: (This is the only article in this thread) | Original Format Date: 1991-07-23 01:14:07 PST I have some new news about BSD, Inc, the alleged company that is allegedly planning to produce an AT&T-free BSD 4.4. The following is provided by Gary Poole, the keeper of the "Industry News" section of UNIXWORLD, where the story was originally broken. Gary tells me that there are some more juicy tidbits to the story that will be unearthed in the September issue of UNIXWORLD. ------ AT&T-FREE BSD In the July issue of UNIX WORLD an article titled "AT&T-Free BSD Set for Fall Release" discussed a company called Berkeley Software Design Inc., which says it will ship an operating system based on Berkeley UNIX without any AT&T code included. [I've received numerous phone calls about the piece (I edit the "Industry News" section) and I've seen some of the discussion about it on the net...] We wrote the story based on information provided by Berkeley Software Design, an offshoot of UUNET, under a non-disclosure agreement. At the time, the company said it expected to demonstrate its AT&T-free BSD at the summer Usenix conference in Nashville, Tenn., but it couldn't provide us with an office address or telephone number. (We decided to run with the piece because we trusted our main source, who we've worked with in the past.) Also, we named Donn Seeley and Bill Jolitz as BSD Inc.'s two full-time employees, but apparently their involvement in BSDI is still under discussion. We also received calls from sources at Berkeley who questioned the accuracy of our information. Like most sources for this story, however, they didn't want to be named. Our understanding, however, is that BSD (4.4) won't be released until early next year. BSD Inc. won have the first implementation of the code. As this story develops, UNIX World will continue its coverage. gary andrew poole, unix world magazine ---------------------------------------- -- Rick Farris RF Engineering POB M Del Mar, CA 92014 voice (619) 259-6793 rfarris@rfengr.com ...!ucsd!serene!rfarris serenity bbs 259-7757
