Quoting from a paper signed by a certain William Joy (the guy who
designed and implemented vi):

    Vi (visual) is a display oriented interactive text editor.
...
    This document provides a quick introduction to vi.  (Pronounced 
    vee-eye.)

One could expect him to know what he was talking about :-)
