I've just finished my 6th attempt at installing 2.2.2 via ftp. The first
two attempts were with a boot/install floppie from 2.1.7 and after the
download completed, I got an error message saying "Makedev returned a
non-zero error status" so I got ahold of the floppy image for installing
2.2.2 and also manually edited the freebsd partitions to get a bigger
"/" . The download completed, everything seemed to go well and I did a
little configuring (with the menu) before re-booting. After a re-boot I
didn't have my hostname, my IP address disappeared on my 3c509 card, and
the /etc/sysconfig file is nowhere to be found. I repeated the install
with the exact same results. The machine is a gateway2000 486 with 8 meg
of ram and a 270 meg HD. I know it's not much but 2.1.7 ran fine, and
all it's going to do from now on is provide dial on demand access to my
ISP for 3 PCs at home and run an occasional telnet session. I'm new to
Unix but not to networking or PCs.
