Hmm, something funny is going on here; because I have no trouble with
uucico, et. al - in fact, I move more than 30 meg a day with uucico,
talking to several types of machines/implementations, both receiving
and making calls (including call backs.)

So, there must be something going wrong somewhere, but it seems to
work marvelously for me....  I've been running this setup since
about the end of last july, right after 0.1 came out.
The only real problem I have now is with sendmail (sometimes a 
reply path gets "munged" incorrectly.)

Perhaps, if we can discover some of the details of your difficulties,
we can figure this out.  Be assured that it _can_ be made to work... :-)
