But last night I was treated to an unexpected thrill. Is this a bug or a feature? I rebooted after about a week up and the kernel announces itself `amnesiac'. What does this mean and why has it occurred? A quick scan of the error messages at boot indicated a look into rc.conf. Upon listing the files in /etc a few items stuck way out total 2077 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 831601 Jul 8 06:26 rc.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 325242 Jul 7 21:40 rc.conf.previous below is a sample of of rc.conf.previous. rc.conf was just more of the same. The file itself was not neatly tabulated (this was done to post), but was one big run-on line. I have no idea by what or why these files were modifed. Suffice to say that is irrelevant at this point, but what to do to prevent a re-occurance is quite relevant. And a current check reveals rc.conf has grown from 6,305 to 50,280 since 8-JUL-97 10:36 EDT. OK, no big deal until I try to re-boot. nice feature, eh? meanwhile I re-copied from a backup file and chmod -w rc.conf.
