You don't have anything in the ModeDB of the Xconfig you posted that
looks like:

 "1024x768" 65 1024 1104 1264 1352 768 806 813 836

And the "Modes" line looks like:

  Modes "880x620" "880x600" "800x600" "984x775"

Instead of:

  Modes "880x620" "880x600" "800x600" "984x775" "1024x768"

The more general problem is probably your dot clocks (which you haven't
posted). For instance, we have a Dell machine with a video card that
can produce 70, 76, 78, 82... Hz output; but the monitor has only one
frequency it can sync to in that range: 72 Hz. Thus without a means of
reprogramming the dot clocks from UNIX, there's no way to support
1024x768 (short of 45 Hz interlace -- Dell technical support said it
wasn't possible at all, but they were wrong).

Make sure you pick a frequency for the 1024x768 that is supported by
*both* your video cards *and* your monitor.

The fact is that the Dell card in question can have it's dot clock
reprogrammed via BIOS calls (INT 10 extended modes), and so can be
set to a higher frequency supported by the monitor. Thus MS Windows
works fine on the same hardware.

Get your dot clocks by redirecting the XServer's output to a file and
looking at what's in the file after you exit X. Then buy a monitor which
supports some frequency (preferrably 70 Hz or higher) that the card is
capable of putting out.

Alternatively, switch out the card and keep the monitor. Either way,
they have to agree on each frequency you want to use.
