I need to purchase a cheap ATAPI cdrom for evaluating another O/S.

Once I have used it for this purpose it would be useful to use it
with FreeBSD.

A quick browse of the release notes suggests that the current
state of the driver is that it will support all drives that
have the ATAPI properly implemented.

My question is that I have the choice of:

NEC 4x which the (discount EOL) seller says is Model CDR 272 (or 274)
SONY 6x " Model CDU 111

Can anyone tell me which one is the best bet.

In other words which maufacturer is most likely to have implemented
the ATAPI correctly.

BTW for normal use I have been sensible and have a SCSI drive to
emable me to install FreeBSD my network hosts :(.

  Thanks in advance etc etc
