Do you have any "set parity" statements in your ppp.conf ?  There was
a problem here that has been fixed (and is available on
http://www.freebsd.org/~brian in the June 24 archive).

If this doesn't help (or you don't use "set parity"), your best bet
is to start with tip/cu/kermit, and make sure that the serial device
itself is functional.  Are you using cuaa* or ttyd*.  I've never really
had much luck with ttyd* and always use cuaa*.

That applies to pppd, not ppp so it shouldn't matter.

Download

  ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/etc/login.conf

and put it in your /etc directory.
