 Hi, * HELP * pleeeeez
after trying to get XFree86 to work all night long,
I didnt give up until
10 this morning. But now I dont know any further:
This is what happens:
When trying to start X with xinit,
X386 obviously tries to set the graphics
mode of my card (the multisync tries to catch it for a moment),
but only for about .5 seconds, then quitting. Sometimes with
"There is no defined dot/clock matching mode" sometimes
without a clue, why it
died at all. I am using the X kernel that came packaged.

This is my configuration:
ISA486-33 16MB , noname vga/16 et4000 card, scsi 1GB HD and 2GB DAT.
On the videocard seems to sit an oscillator with 14.3C2X written on it.

This is what I tried:
I did everything mentioned in the READMEs. Inserted the path, changed
Xconfig about 100 times (ModeDBs).
I didnt bother with mouse settings yet, but that
shouldnt be a reason for the server to die , should it ?
The fontpath is corect. But no change if its not:
Obviously the server doesnt
get to the point where he requires for the fonts.
I did all the kernel patches besides the one for init.c .
I run the kernel setrootid. The exitcode, when run with gdb is 01.
It seems that the mono server works for .3
seconds longer than the color, before
being killed, resp. dieing.
I even got : "Cannot find mouse" and "failed to init core devices"
once, but
still the video mode was only switched on for .5 seconds or so before
it switched back.

This is what I guess or not know:
Do I have to make /dev/vt devices? What do I have to put in Xconfig for
a serial mouse on com1 (without any com-kernel patches yet)?
Are there other special permissions to be observed besides setrootid
for the
servers ? (I chown everything to bin, and opened it up
for reading and execution)
Do I have to setup something special for unix sockets ? Does the Xserver
expect certain demons to be running ?
( I switched off some of the network
stuff, for it is a single user machine)

Well, here I am at the end with my latin (is this international?). Sigh.
I would greatly appreciate any help, pointers, suggestions etc.
Thanx for your efforts
Arnd

ps.Excuse horrible formatting, but the modem-connection wasnt without
problems today
