I have a system with an AMD 486DX4-100, 16 MB, an Adaptec 2940, and a
Seagate ST43400N. I had tried running FreeBSD 2.1.5 on it but that
was a total disaster -- after running for a bit, it would crash and I
would find random bits of disk smashed with zeroes, usually parts of
directories or inodes. I replaced every part of the system except the
Adaptec, with the same results. I finally gave up when I heard that
FreeBSD 2.1.5 and the 2940 had major problems with each other.

After reading about 2.2.2 and its fixes for the 2940 I decided to try
it again. Things were going better for a while, but then it started
up with its same old tricks.

Should I just try to track down a Buslogic 946 (I think that's the PCI
version) and give up on the Adaptec? I've swapped the disk, memory,
the motherboard, the CPU, cables, and even the power supply, so I can
think of nothing left but the 2940.
