He _is_ using the raw device (that's why nRst1), Chris.  The Nrst1
supposedly means the non-rewind-on-close device.

But you probably don't know what a QIC-3020 drive is either. :)  It has
nothing in common with serious tape drives...  You gotta format your
cartridges there in advance.  So the `medium format corrupted' really
means the medium is bad (at least, it needs to be reformatted).
