Hmmm. How many PCI slots does this thing have in it, just out of
curiousity?

Hmmm. That's bad. Just curious: Does 2.1.7.1's boot floppy do the same
thing? I'm trying to isolate the driver characteristics a little here.

From the sound of things, it's most certainly the card going deaf for
some odd reason - there's nothing in this configuration which you need
to change or inspect, it's undoubtedly all correct.

The Intel Etherexpress Pro 100B. That trailing 'B' is also important.
It's a better card than the SMC and the driver for it generates
measurably lower CPU overhead at 100Mbits.
