I have a pretty complete, modular MIDI sequencer that I wrote for the
Amiga, but on Unix I think it would be best to do all the realtime
sequencing in a driver.  (On the Amiga's OS, it being realtime, a
task could achieve perfectly good response time if run at sufficiently
high priority.)

There was an MPU-401 driver for one or more of the commercial 386 Unixes.
