1. Install the binaries from the /stand/sysinstall. That will run the
configuration script and some other
    stuff as well.  
2. Then you can use /usr/X11R6/bin/xstart to start it temperarily to make
sure that your 
    mouse and video board work. 
3. Finally configure xdm for your regular X login.
