The upgrade isn't required.  Someone released patches to the
user ppp program that handled the masquerading.  I was doing
this back around Oct with 2.1.x.  I tried to find the URL but
it looks like I lost it.

Since when is recompiling one program less desirable than upgrading 
the entire OS just to obtain one feature?  No offence, but that
sounds like a Microsoft-ism.
