Hi!

I have a problem getting 21140-based Ethernet cards to work, and maybe
someone here already has had the same problem and has solved it.

We are running NetBSD 1.2, and we tried connecting the computer to
our (conventional 10Mb/) network using a Lantronics LFA-PT (which uses a
DEC 21140-AE).

The network configuration is OK (we just swapped the new card with
the one we're using all the time and change the ifconfig to
use device de0 insted of our usual eth2). The tulip driver is
compiled into the kernel, and the ethernet adapter is detected
when the system is booted and initializes with no error message.

While the card itself seems happy (as far as one can tell from flashing
lights), it simply does not work at all.

We then plugged the card into a Linux PC. At first, it did not work
either, but when I get a new driver from the net (tulip.c by
Donald Becker), it worked just fine. So we naturally suspected a
problem with the NetBSD DEC tulip driver.

Hoping that the problem might be due to a peculiarity of the LFA-PT,
we exchanged it for the SMC Ether Power 10/100. Well, nothing gained
by that - the SMC did not work either. It did not detect the
10 MB/s (the driver reported 100 MB/s), and the lights stopped
flashing altogather once the driver had initialized the card.

Which is really not a huge surprise regarding the fact that it also
has a DEC 21140-AE. Looking through old news archives I found some
mails about a "new" (at that time) "-AC" revision of the tulip chip
makeing patches necessary.

Or am I overlooking something obvious?

Did anyone get any DEC 21140-AE module to work under NetBSD?

Jakob
