Certainly.  I've got it running on 2.2.1...

So, you're missing a library for perl.  Apparently you have to have
perl 5 installed which contains that missing library:

% locate libperl
/usr/local/lib/perl5/i386-freebsd/5.003/CORE/libperl.a

In contrast to perl 4, perl 5 isn't part of the basic system.
