The MIT-SHM extension for Xservers does, too.  Some image programs
might benefit from it (maybe that's why you've got gimp in your
list?).

Non-existence of the SYSVSHM option in the kernel is caught by the
XFree86 server at startup (by intercepting SIGSYS), and causes it to
disable the extension.  ISTR that Accelerated X requires the presence
of the feature.
