yep, that was part of it.  I'm not using a name server (just the
/etc/hosts file) because my internal network is only four machines.  It
turns out that I also had the last two items in the entry to the fstab
file wrong, they are both supposed to be 0 (zero) and with those two fixes
everything is automatic.
