You don't need to format them. You just need to disklabel (partition)
them and newfs the filesystems. I think the install takes care of
some of this for you.

Well, I personally would install NetBSD on the 386 and use that to
netboot the Sparc. However, you would want a little more drive
space to do that (like, say, 120 MB or so).
