: The very first thing to do, if have not already done so, is buy something
: like The Complete Free BSD By Greg Lehey. In this book you will find a
: chapter on Rebuilding the kernel. Read it. Then go to
: /usr/src/sys/i386/conf and edit GENERIC (the configuration file) using
: the knowledge gained from reading the book.

: The details are outlined in the book and without the book configuring the
: GENERIC file would be quite the experience.
:
You can also go to /usr/share/doc/smm/02.config and read the paper.
Yeah, I know it's not specific to FreeBSD and the intended audience
is definitely not beginners but you'll get the philosophy behind
config(8)... At the time I started using FreeBSD, it was the only document
available (apart from SunOS4.1 manuals) and it proved to be quite useful!
