32 MB is probably OK for a 1 GB proxy cache.  On our server with 3.5 GB
in the cache, Squid (1.1.10) is using 90 MB of ram!  The cache is on a 4
GB disk while I have another 2 GB for the logs
(access,cache,store,etc).  Do no underestimate how much extra 'stuff'
squid can generate...

Appropriate ACLs will solve your access problems.

See the squid.conf entry "ftpget_options".  Eg.

ftpget_options -p http://diablo.OntheNet.com.au/icons/ -s .gif
