Ah.  You have refreshed my memory.

I have correctly built GIMP 0.99.9 on my 2.2-ALPHA system, using
non-shared libraries.  It's big, it's fat, it works beautifully (and the
GIMP is mostly worth it).

IIRC, it takes more than 120 megs to build.  There are tricks you can use
to minimize use (#1-- when you run out of disk space, strip all of the
plug-ins). 

Unfortunately, the shared library stuff seems to not understand the BSD
shared lib model.  This appears to be the fault of one of the config
sub-tools (can't remember the name at the moment, IIRC it's libconfig).
If someone groks GNU configure (esp. libconfig) and wants to put a port
together (or better yet send patches to the gimp team) that would be good.

Sorry I can't be more helpful than that, although I can state that the
non-shared version works great.
