I have been trying desperately to install some sort of UNIX clone or
workalike on my computer for almost a month now. I am sick of the DOS
interface and am ready to move on to the next level.

Unfortunately, my computer does not agree with me.

I admit, my hardware is a bit outdated: IBM Ambra 486-66 with 16M RAM.
Part of the reason I want to use UNIX is I want the full use of my
hardware, instead of getting a Pentium to play Doom in Windows 95 like
everybody else who can't wait to throw away their money.

But, back to the point...

First, I tried Linux. Bought the CDs and a book, and on bootup soon
realized that /dev/hdb (I connected the CD ROM to the second plug on my
hard disk controller cable) was eliciting (as Linux so eloquoently put it)
"no response." After trying lots of different approaches, no dice.

So now I am lured by the apparent simplicity of downloading a FreeBSD boot
disk, and using ppp to install everything else from freebsd.org. Hope has
been restored. I am searching baby name books for the moniker of my new
machine.

But, alas. I have been foiled again. FreeBSD installation starts the ppp
program on the com port I specify (my modem is on 2), and I change
desktops to run the term program to dial my ISP, and my modem will not
respond to AT commands.

What is the deal? Am I even accessing my modem? Any ideas? I am
desperate and will name my computer after you if you can solve my problem.

Sincerely,
Mark Ledesma
