I have a Mac PowerBook Duo with a docking station that has an Ethernet
card. The card in the PC and the Mac has connectors for 10BaseT.
Usually you connect both cards with patch cables to a "hub" but with
only two equipments you can connect them directly with a "cross over"
cable. This is a cable with a totally different wiring than ordinary
patch cables.

No problem with software. You just configure the Mac in the TCP/IP
control panel for direct Ethernet. Now you can run telnet to get
a terminal, WWW, FTP and all other Internet applications.

You need CAP or netatalk only if you want to share printers or
want the FreeBSD machine to be an AppleTalk server. I know
netatalk also let the FreeBSD box print out on printers connected
to the Mac's LocalTalk port.

Even more fun, if you have a modem to your PC that you use for
connecting with PPP to an ISP then you can configure so that
the Mac can reach the Internet too trough the sane connection
at the same time. But that is a longer story.

But I may have missunderstood your question. Do you want to do a
PPP connection from the Mac serial port to the PC serial port
to save to cost of buying an Ethernet card?
