I've finally managed to get around the gdk lib bug in the compilation.
But instead of getting a gdk lib not found I now get

ld: no shared -lXext.6.1 available

Now I assume this is because the command line doesn't include
-L/usr/X11/lib but I've spent a rather long time trying to locate the
call to this command in the makefile but have been unsuccessful.

the actual command begins like this:

ld -Bshareable -o .libs/libgtk.so.1.0 gtkaccelerator.lo...

using version gimp 0.99.9
