Have a look at the current copy of ppp.conf.sample
(there's a link from http://www.awfulhak.org/ppp.html)
The direct-client and direct-server labels have
the *correct* line to add so that you can see yourself:

 add x.x.x.x 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1
