an update: system is 486DX2-80 32MB ram 33MB swap, and more than ample
space on the hdds. i one more time tried /stand/sysinstall to add the
package minicom. 9 hours later it was still on the screen reading package
info (from memory so not exact) on tty0 was /stand/sysinstall on tty1
command line prompt on tty2 top which had the following information load
average 1.00 1.00 1.00. i did conclude that was sufficient of a wait. i
checked and it had not been installed. to say the least i am mystified.
