I experience the same problem but can make subsequent logins more
reliable by running kermit and doing a set line /dev/ttyd4 (it has the
modem attatched) and leaving the machine like that. It seems as though
this goes part way to keeping the port happy!!
This allows someone to login regulary on this port. While work is being
done by this person I am loath to make changes to the setup but I would
like to know what is causing failure of the system to give the login
prompt 2nd time round.

system is 2.1 release off cdrom, on a P60 8Meg ram with a 'PCCOM' 4 port
(Widoshi) serial card with 4 16550's.
