It sounds like a termination thing - something in 2.2 may be
rubbing it up the wrong way.

I have a machine that boots fine and runs fine under DOS & windows
with the external CDR switched off.  FreeBSD freezes.

Turning it on or putting the terminator block on the back of the
machine fixes things.

It's the only situation I've seen where termination power must be
required (whatever that is).
