Hmmm.  Well, there's at least a 50% chance that the bug is on the Linux
side and were that to be the case, I couldn't help you. :-)

However, perhaps some dinking around with a packet monitor (bpfilter +
tcpdump on FreeBSD side, i-dont-know-what on the Linux side) will show
if there is some particular type of traffic which pressages the hangs;
that might at least allow you to narrow it down.

No matter what you do, there's probably some driver hacking ahead. 
You're probably one of the few people to actually try and use the
FreeBSD <-> Linux PLIP interoperability and the code on either side may
be falling over in response to unexpected conditions.
