NT4 gets that bit closer.  It puts a standard MBR on the boot disk
while installing, then puts the original back when it's done
rebooting a few times.  Wouldn't it be a laugh if there was an
"out by one" error in there *grin*.

Probably not though, the original guy was using 95 (which as you say,
omits the "put it back" bit).
