People have already pointed out that this is a bug.  For now,
shut the machine down with CTRL-ALT-DEL and type -s at the
boot prompt.  You'll get a shell where you can change the
root password (after doing "fsck -p" and "mount -a -t nonfs").

Of course if you've set your consoles to "secure", you know
enough to boot the fixit floppy :)
