In some situations, that's quite possible. As I understand it, the
split between the stable and current FreeBSD's happened around v. 2.2
Under that split, one distribution (2.1.7, if memory serves) is 
stable and reliable, while another (including 2.2.1, I think) has
more new and improved features, at the price of less stability and
careful debugging. It sounds like you've hit a bug in the current
distribution. If you need to get it up an running in a hurry and
want a very stable operating system, I'd suggest installing v. 2.1.7
and living without the improvements in 2.2.1.
