If I remember correctly, XDM requires the userid/passwd of the user whi= ch started it, from the system console where XDM was initiated, despite th= e generic logon screen. I had to log on AS root, and ONLY as root. Then I would get the Xsession setup (be default: TWM). Thiw was when there was= =20NO other X-session going (XDM then "grabs" the console and keyboard). In the long run, unless you want to provide YOUR X-windows environment = for some other X-terminal, I wouldn't bother with XDM. The STARTX command i= s much better for direct/on-system-console X-windows initiation. You also can run STARTX as any user (ie; you don't have to be root). Later, once you have X up and running, if you want to provide your X environment for remote X-terminals, then you can easily start up XDM, i= t will see that X is already running, and then go into background-daemon mode, acting as a proxy X-server.
