Now that's what I call an expensive call.  Havn't you got a local ISP ?

ppp is more stable in 2.2 than it was before.  It should *NEVER*
"miss" the timeout or fail to accept a "close".  The only times
I've seen these behaviours is when it's "jammed" - pre 2.2.  When
it's jammed, you can't telnet to 3000, and the program gobbles
up cpu time like there's no tomorrow.  I havn't heard of any
occurences like this on 2.2.1-RELEASE or after.

You can always resort to "kill -9" if you have to run the older
version.  This should cause loss of DTR and make your modem
disconnect.  It's a bit harsh, but it's the only thing that'll
stop that nasty "spin".
