Assuming you try to boot off an IDE disk. Try configuring the IDE disk in various ways (no block remapping etc), as i don't know which bios hp uses i cannot give definitive answer here. The reason is that the bios may offer to remap the disk to a geometry that DOS can handle, but in that process confuses bsd - boot. Most bios are configurable about this. If hp-s is not, well i would consider that as a reason to switch box.
