Not sure whether it's the same problem, but when i recently installed
FreeBSD on a new HP Netserver LC, i noticed that they didn't even try
to boot the harddisk if there was no valid fdisk table on it. Sh*t!,
i can't stand fdisk tables, und thus normally dump BSD right from
sector 0. I ended up using a `sliced' disk on that machine, with a
regular fdisk table, and BSD sitting in one of the table slots only.

HP is becoming a Windows company these days.
