Hi,

just for those who like that:

Today I installed FreeBSD 2.1.7.1 on an old IBM Laptop L40SX.
This system has 6MB RAM, 120MB Disk, 386SX20 CPU.

First I made the floppies needed for the installation on
another FreeBSD System.

The installation itself was very slow (no CoProcessor!). Took
about 2h to install: bin, doc, manpages, src (ssmail.cfg), but
went on without any problems. (BTW couldn't manage to get
Linux installed on that system :-))

The system is needed as an uucp/mail connection for a co-worker
who needs to stay in touch with the office.

UUCP, sendmail and pine are running fine, formating man pages
with man <page> takes ages...(but finally works). Building
ckermit from source took another 40 minutes. apsfilter
failed to get installed. I haven't figured out why by now.

Just to see if it works I installed the following packages:
tcsh, recode, mtools, ghostscript, lynx, pine, popclient, psutils
and a2ps. Everything works like I expected it to do.

I used one partition for / only and gave it 16MB as SWAP.

df shows 30M free after all.

Overall a nice cheap solution.

Future plans are setting up ppp to connect to the office.

Regards, Stephan
