user level ppp is tons easier.

Been there.

put this in /etc/ppp/ppp.conf:

default:
 disable lqr
 deny lqr
 disable pred1
 deny pred1
 set openmode active
 set timeout 0
 set ifaddr 0 0
 set dial "TIMEOUT 30 \"\" atdt\\T\\r\\c CONNECT"

inet:
 set device /dev/cuaa0
 set speed 38400
 set phone ppp**ppp
 dial

modem:
 set device /dev/cuaa2
 set speed 115200

put this in /etc/ppp/ppp.linkup:

MYADDR:
 add 0 0 HISADDR

'ppp inet' will fire up the link through ricochet. When I am out
of ricochet coverage and have other choices, I use 'ppp modem' to
set up a connection with a pcmcia modem.

You could also run ppp in the daemon mode, but I typically don't,
as the connection won't survive suspend/resume, and I get on the
net with an Ethernet card when I am at home.

While you're at it, I would recommend putting a cache-only name server
on the machine, as doing DNS across ricochet adds more latency to an
already latency-pounded situation.
