Are you sure the machine knows if its IP address correctly?  talk is
very sensitive to this kind of thing, if the machine has an entry for
itself in /etc/hosts (or even in the DNS) with the wrong IP address,
most services will still work properly, but talk will fail with exactly
this kind of errors.  This tends to happen to machines on dynamic IP.
