You can start programs from the .xinitrc (in the background, of course), from an xterm (a soon as you have on :-) ) or from the window manager's menus - you can configure this in .twmrc or .fvwmrc or whatever your wm is. You can switch from X to a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-f[123] and back to X with alt-f4. Are there error messages on the terminal you startet X from? Bye, Philipp -- P.
