Did you "use the port?"  The first time I downloaded Netscape 3.01 for
FreeBSD, I didn't use the port (like a dumbass, perhaps), and Java never
worked.  As soon as I used the port / used a correct wrapper for netscape
which exported CLASSPATH, etc, Netscape, Java, and the Java console worked 
flawlessly.
