Setup ppp on-demand.  Follow the instructions in the handbook.  Make sure your
default route is added by ppp because you do not want routed running (routed 
will basically give you a permanent connection).  With ppp on-demand you no
longer need to start ppp manually, just start your net application and the
system will do the rest.
