I have the exact same problem.  Thought it was just me.  Guess not.
I have one additional weirdness though, which is even if I telnet
to another box, say a solaris box, then run its netscape over X
to my FreeBSD box, the java stuff doesn't work!  it exibits the
same symptoms as if I were running the local BSD copy.  very 
weird.
