There's a lot of marketing hype with Java, sure.  But i had to learn
that it's a somewhat pragmatic, but carefully thought language.  Not
only that they've learnt from languages like C++ (and understood to
not scare off programmers by creating an entirely new syntax), they
have also a security concept in mind from the beginning.  Given that
Java has mainly been designed to be an ``Internet language'', this is
the only correct strategy to use.

Now compare this with ActiveX...  You know the story of the German
Chaos Computer Club who demonstrated (to state an example) that you
can fairly easily abuse ActiveX to perform arbitrary actions on the
clients machine, including starting the client's bank accounting
program, and initiate a money transfer? =:-)

Java is interpreted, sure, that makes it not very fast.  But it's
platform-independent.  I've never seen platform-independant code come
out of M$.
