Sounds like you weren't running as root.  Either login as root (and set a
password for it!) or (if your other username(s) are configured to allow
this, i.e., are member of group "wheel") "su" to root first.

Don't know what these are.  Were you installing from CD-ROM, ftp, or what?
Perhaps you're missing the X distribution?
