That was a very meaningless change.  Unless you specify -r when
booting (see boot(8)), the kernel automatically tries to change the
root device to the device it has been booted from.

Do you have BSD on the second disk (where the first disk is IDE)?
This would explain it, you need special boot parameters then.

If this is all on the first disk, please supply more input.  In
particular, which devices have been found at probe time.
