NT is basically a piece of shit, as is windows 95... but microsoft has
the marketing power and user base to impose it on the rest of the world
and most people do not know any better.
And, at the same time, most of the commercial UNIX vendors are too busy
infighting to address the issue. They spend their time developing 'open'
standards that are, in fact, proprietary, and trying to one-up
each other. It's idiotic. It's sorta like school children pushing and
shoving to get at the head of the line while a thousand pound gorilla is
bearing down on the snack bar.
What is so frightening about this whole thing is that most people
*actually* *believe* the crap microsoft is spewing out. Everything
microsoft puts out is second-rate and second-class, but most people
seem to believe that it's first-rate and first-class because it's
the only thing they are exposed to.
Personally, i think the operating system is so critical to our future
that it should not be under the control of any for-profit company.
Microsoft is almost single-handedly destroying the core that will
build our tomorrow. It makes me ill to think about where we would be
if they actually win... it would be a giant step backwards.
