Usually this kind of thing happens when programs are trying to do
something with .../as/xyz and .../as was accidentally created as
a file, rather than a directory.  It could also happen when some
implicit search path involves .../as/... and you have a file as in
one of the directories involved in that path.

I'd suggest the next time it occurs, doing a "find / -type f -name as"
and see what possibilities exist.

This can be kind of like having . in your path and a program called "test",
all kinds of things act goofy for no obvious reason (aliases /bin/test used
in many shell scripts).
